What actually needs to change, and what was already working
AI search tools now answer questions directly instead of just pointing to pages that might have the answer. This changes how content gets found, but it doesn't mean your entire content strategy needs rebuilding.
If you were worried that your years of SEO efforts were wasted, you can take comfort in the fact that most of what previously worked in organic search still works today. The reality is you need to identify which parts need updating, which parts matter more now, and how to stay ahead of this new frontier of search.

What AI Search Actually Changes
How to Structure Content for AI Overviews
Put the direct answer in the first paragraph, before background or context, and match your headings to how people phrase questions.
Start by auditing your highest-value pages and checking whether the useful information is buried three paragraphs down. Restructure those pages before moving on to the rest of your site.
AI systems tend to pull from pages that answer one specific question well over pages that try to cover an entire topic. When people use AI tools to answer specific questions, they expect specific answers. As a result, a comprehensive resource touching ten related questions is less efficient for an AI system to extract a clean answer from than a page built around one question with a direct answer up front.
What Gets You Cited in AI Search Answers
Get your brand into industry roundups, comparison articles, and "best of" lists that cover your category. Pitch the journalists and writers behind them the way you'd pitch any other press contact, and follow up on outdated placements the way you'd fix a broken backlink.
Semrush's research on AI search trends found that these lists are among the source types AI answers cite most often. AI Overviews can list a brand pulled from a roundup even when that brand doesn't rank on page one organically for the query.
This might sound like a traditional backlink strategy as you would employ a similar tactic to build links because traditional search runs on link equity. A link from a high-authority roundup boosts your domain's ranking signal whether or not anyone clicks through to read it.
AI citation runs on extraction instead. A model pulls your brand directly from a roundup or comparison piece it trusts and cites you in its answer, without needing a link that passes authority the way a traditional backlink does. A nofollow mention, or a brand mention with no link at all, used to rank low on a backlink SEO priority list. Either one can now put your brand inside an AI answer.
Measuring AI SEO Performance
We are getting this question from clients increasingly often, especially as click-through rates from organic search are dropping. Semrush's AI search research found that clicks drop sharply on queries where an AI summary appears, and in one study, only 1% of users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself. This can be a huge shift for sites that count on people clicking through to their sites to access information.
There are new tools available for tracking AI search visibility. You should also change how you track and interpret existing search and traffic data:
- AI Overview appearances: how often your pages get pulled into AI-generated answers for relevant queries, tracked in Search Console's Generative AI performance report or a tool like Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit. Use these numbers to track growth in AI search appearances.
- Branded search volume: the number of searches for your company name, lives in Google Search Console or a tool like Semrush. Unbranded search impressions can drop as people get their answer directly from an AI Overview or an AI tool like ChatGPT, without clicking through to any site. If your brand gets cited in that answer, some of those same people search your brand name afterward to learn more. Watch branded query volume in Search Console alongside your unbranded impressions. A rise in branded search that coincides with a drop in unbranded impressions suggests AI Overviews are answering the generic queries directly, while your citations are prompting people to look you up by name.
- AI Assistant traffic: visits that click through from a supported AI platform to your site, shows up in GA4's dedicated AI Assistant channel, which Google added in May 2026 for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Some AI search traffic still lands in Referral instead, attributed to the platform's domain (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and so on), and some lands in Direct when an in-app browser or a copy-pasted link strips the referrer before the click reaches your site. Check all three (AI Assistant, Referral, and Direct) when you're trying to isolate this traffic.
We're also seeing that visits that still come through search tend to be more qualified. Someone who clicks past an AI summary to reach your site has found the quick answer lacking and wants more. You may need to begin optimizing for fewer, higher-intent visits rather than optimizing for raw traffic volume, and begin making engagement rate a higher priority reporting metric.
The Fundamentals That Matter More Now
Technical SEO for AI Search Crawlability
Google's own guidance on generative AI search explains that these features are built on the same core ranking and indexing systems as regular search results. Your pages still need to be indexed and crawlable to show up in an AI answer. Here are a few common issues that keep otherwise good content out of AI Overviews entirely:
- Slow, script-heavy pages. Pages that take too long to load, or that only show their main copy once scripts finish running, can get skipped during crawling entirely, no matter how good the content is.
- Robots.txt blocks. A page blocked from crawlers can't be indexed, and a page that isn't indexed can't be cited.
- Missing structured data. Schema markup, such as FAQ, How-to, and Article types, isn't required for AI inclusion, but it helps clarify what's on a page for crawlers and AI systems alike, and it's worth maintaining as standard technical SEO.
Fast load times, a clean site structure, and strong indexability are still the foundation of a strong search strategy. No amount of AI-specific tactics fixes a site with weak technical SEO underneath it.
Original Expertise and Non-Commodity Content
The question you need to ask for every piece of content you want cited in AI search is "Could an AI system produce a reasonable version of a given page without ever reading it?" If yes, the page needs a specific example, data point, or perspective that only you can provide.
AI systems can generate commonly known information themselves, so content that restates what's already available elsewhere carries little value as a citation source. First-hand examples, original data, specific numbers from your own work, and opinions grounded in direct experience get cited instead.
A generic explainer titled "Why SEO Matters for Small Business" is commodity content; an AI system could write a competent version of it without visiting your site. A breakdown of the specific keyword clusters that moved a client's organic traffic by 40% in one quarter, with real before-and-after numbers, is not something an AI system can produce on its own.
Google's E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) has rewarded this kind of content for years already, and AI search makes that standard matter more. A page built on direct experience and demonstrated expertise gives an AI system a reason to cite your website instead of generating the generic version itself.
Brand Consistency Across the Web
SEO practitioners increasingly treat entity consistency, how closely a brand's name, address, and details match across your site, Google Business Profile, third-party directories, and press coverage, as a trust signal AI systems weigh when deciding who to cite. A mismatched address between your Google Business Profile and your website footer, or a press mention that still uses a product name you've since retired, is the kind of inconsistency this practice targets.
Branded search volume plays into this too. SEO practitioners describe search demand for a brand name as a form of entity authority, a signal that treats a brand as a real, established thing worth citing directly. A podcast appearance, a press mention, or an industry award builds your brand while also feeding that same signal.
Next Steps for Your AI SEO Strategy
The businesses gaining ground in AI SEO are strengthening the same fundamentals that have mattered in SEO for years while adding structural updates for how AI systems extract answers.
Restructure your top-performing pages that bury the answer, add a real example or data point where the content reads as commodity, and check your branded search trends against your click data. Build the next few pieces around the fundamentals above from the start.
